Today I found out that the teacher had organised a field trip to the ABC station. We boarded the bus at 10:00. While we were getting there I pretty much had to force a conversation out of Captain Buzzkill who was determined to be unsocial. I tried out any subject that I could think of that might get them to dwell into a conversation. By the end of the ride I had been less then successful.
When we got there I was looking forward to getting inside the building. We waited in the front office so that our teacher could park the bus. I imagined he would arrive about an hour later :P . I noticed several of the students made it their sworn duty to inform the front desk that our teacher would be arriving after they had parked the bus, and I do mean several. Once our teacher arrived the tour started.
We walked to the area where they did the radio show I noticed the walk ways were rather small. When we went in I was amazed about how much equipment they used. After our Tour Guide told us a little about the radio room the producer tried to give us some information about her job, unfortunately it was one of those days and she had to stop and go back to doing her work.
During our gathering in the journalist’s room, one of our class members fought tooth and nail to get the stations email address. Quite frankly I thought if I were one of the journalists I would have been scared of her. As the journalists explained how they go about using material given to them by a local amateur journalist (a topic reached by our address prodding friend) I couldn’t help but agree with their method. I mean I would also be sceptical of people sending in their shots of “big” stories we wouldn’t want a Darwin version of “Chik Chik Boom Girl”, now would we?
The highlight of the trip was when we entered the studio for their news program. I was very amazed about the size of it. It was actually smaller then my bedroom. Unfortunately this part of the tour destroyed the illusion one student had of the show. I found out that apart from the traditional Blue and Green Screens was a third Yellow screen. After much discussion about why we used the Green Screen we came to the idea that the Yellow Screen would be used for Alien Visitors (Kind of glad to see some stations are hopeful and organised). As we left our journal scaring friend pointed out that an exercise bike resided in the director’s room. Before the Tour Guide could explain I told her it was for any situation where the station would lose power, and they could use the hamster method (Generating Electrical energy by using .
After that the tour was over we thanked the Tour Guide and I managed to ask if he liked his job......I was happy to find out he did enjoy working at the ABC station, he could have lied but I’d prefer to believe him.
I once again tried to communicate with General Buzzkill this time I was successful. Although they just talked about how they couldn’t be a journalist because of the fact they had to be so emotionally strong. I tried to associate myself with her by telling her that it would be of a similar reason that I wouldn’t be able to be a police officer. Unfortunately all that came out of that conversation was the fact I wouldn’t even be able to be a police officer anyway. So ignoring the fact I had stated I didn’t want to be a police officer because of a certain reason we can go ahead and state there would be no way I could be a police officer.
When we got back we copied the photo’s that some students had taken during the trip attached to this blog is some of the photo’s.
